Handcrafted Tuscan Ceramic Rooster Pitcher

$36.00

Many years ago in the Renaissance Republic of Florence; the two most powerful families – the Medicis and the Pazzis – were fierce rivals. Giuliano Medici loved a good party; it wasn’t uncommon for him to host a festa for the villagers who worked the massive land holdings of the family. A sordid plot was devised to convince Giuliano to throw a party in the nearby village of Gallina whereupon Pazzi clan hitmen would sneak in and surprise the inebriated Giuliano and his guards. Plan in place, the assassin party held back until the cover of dark before making a stealthy approach to the village. What they didn’t account for, however, was the field full of slumbering hens and roosters that began to cackle and crow wildly as the intruders stumbled upon them. Awakened by the clamor, Giuliano’s soldiers overtook the gatecrashers and dispatched them quickly.

Grateful for the village’s fowl security system, an immediate order was given to craft ceramic pitchers in the shape of a crowing rooster. Giuliano hosted a second party the next evening and presented each of Gallina’s families with a rooster pitcher – la brocca di gallo. This symbol of good luck, prosperity, and protection retains the same meaning all these years later and is often presented as a housewarming or wedding gift.

  • Handcrafted ceramic design offering a unique, vintage charm.

  • Colorful rooster detailing adds a playful touch to any decor.

  • Functional and decorative, perfect for both everyday use and special occasions.

Size- 8” diameter, 9.5” H
